Castles in the Sand - The Athabasca Sand Dunes

Conquering the sand dunesIn the northwest corner of Saskatchewan, along the south shore of Lake Athabasca is an area unique to North America. The Athabasca Sand Dunes boasts the largest area of sand dunes in North America and the biggest sand dunes in North America. You'll think you've somehow ended up in northern Africa. It was a long float plane ride. Hmmm...

Because this area is so unique and so fragile, the Saskatchewan Government preserved it as a Wilderness Park. On this wilderness trip you'll get to hike and canoe through an area that is pretty amazing! You'll get to stand on top of the biggest sand dunes on the continent. You'll see plants that only grow here. You'll understand why the Athabasca Sand Dunes Wilderness Area is being protected. Imagine, standing on the largest sand dune in North America. You look in every direction and all you can see is sand. Come hiking with us to explore this amazing region of northern Saskatchewan.


Day 0:
Hiking in the sand dunesMeet in Missinipe, Northern Saskatchewan. Transwest Air flies to La Ronge from Saskatoon several times each day. CRCO can meet you at the airport or bus terminal. CRCO will have a cabin waiting for you in Missinipe.

Day 1:
After breakfast the group will board a float plane and fly to Thomson Bay on Lake Athabasca, one of the world's largest lakes. After getting organized and setting up camp you will spend the rest of the day hiking along the lake shore.

Day 2-4:
There are numerous day and overnight hikes to choose from. You may hike to the petrified forest or to the William River. Or to the largest sand dunes in North America. Or just wander
around finding some of the indigenous plants growing in the area. There are many possibilities, all depending on what the group wants to do.

Day 5:
Sizing up the Athabasca sand dunes in Northern SaskatchewanThe float plane will arrive mid morning to return you to Missinipe. For those who require, CRCO can provide transportation back to the airport in La Ronge. For others, there will be a cabin available in Missinipe.
