Spruce Spires & Wildland Ways

winter funDogsledding The Boreal Forest and Lakes - four nights including one on the trail. Our 'Top Dog' - full-service excursion! You'll spend unforgettable days learning to run a dog team accompanied by our guide-hosts, while exploring Saskatchewan's edge of largest forest region in Canada. The boreal forest and lakes of Prince Albert National Park area your playground and inspiration during a wintertime exploration of this iconic Canadian landscape.

Day by day you build your mushing knowledge, skills and comfort level with the sled dogs. No previous experience is necessary. Our guide-hosts share their love and in-depth knowledge of the landscape with you as the team takes you through the mosaic of woods, muskegs and lakes that are the boreal forest.

For your two-day, one-overnight portion of the trip in the backcountry, you shelter 'under canvas' in a traditional prospectors tent with a warm stove and great food. It's a chance to share stories and enjoy the camaraderie of mushers. The howl of the huskies might even be your bedtime lullaby.

When you're not on the sled, try crosscountry skiing on the groomed trails, snowshoeing, or skate on the lake, see the activities at a local curling or hockey rink or simply relax in front of the fireplace in the spacious and spectacular Elk Ridge Resort Lodge.

Finely appointed accommodations and meals with our partners, four-star, Elk Ridge Resort enhance your adventure. Elk Ridge chefs take pride in highlighting regionally grown and locally prepared items as part of your menu.Be ready to savour;

Appetizer: Forest Mushroom Bisque, Silver thyme, Fireweed honey crème fraiche and warm Canadian brie
Main Course: “Prairie raised” Bison short Ribs, Sweet potato pave, braised forest mushrooms, Saskatoon berries and parsnip puree
Dessert: Crème Brûlé Duo
Wine Pairing A Glass of; Quails Gate, Pinot Noir, Canadian

This package includes interpretive/orientation sessions, all dog sledding activities, equipment for snowshoeing; four nights accommodations (double occupancy), two feature meals, nature outing in area and an in-room welcome and souvenir basket.

exploreUpon arrival we meet indoors for about an hour and a half to prepare everyone for mushing. You learn about safety procedures, dressing for mushing, are introduced to the equipment, sled, dog care and a Sundogs 'ambassa-dog' who'll help you feel most welcome. You'll have the opportunity to learn how to harness and bootie a dog. We'll also watch a couple of short video clips about dog sledding and the boreal forest.

You begin your excursion the next morning. Say 'Hello' to the Sundogs, learn some of their names, rub a few heads, and begin to get to know them as individuals. After an orientation outdoors you mush a variety of trails over several days including the two-day/one night backcountry excursion.

Depending upon trail conditions, weather and other factors guests have an opportunity to drive a team for a distance accompanied by a guide-host each day. Since mushing is a quiet activity once we are running, there will be interpretation of the boreal forest and winter ecology.

Everyone has good exposure to the huskies and help with camp chores and meals. At Sundogs we believe that guests are an integral part of every team, so you should be ready to share in basic dog handling and camp duties such as holding and harnessing dogs, cleaning up after them and helping to make a campfire, for example.
